Shelbourne Hotel
With a fanciful red-brick and white-trimmed facade, enhanced by wrought-iron railings and window boxes brimming with flowers, this grand six-story hostelry stands out on the north side of St. Stephen's Green. Built in 1824, it has played a significant role in Irish history--the new nation's constitution was signed in Room 112 in 1921. It has often been host to international leaders, stars of stage and screen, and literary giants. The public areas, replete with glowing fireplaces, Waterford chandeliers, and original art, are popular rendezvous spots for Dubliners. Guest rooms vary in size, but all offer up-to-date comforts and are furnished with antique and period pieces. The front units overlook St. Stephen's Green. In 1996, nearly $2.5 million went into refurbishing the Shelbourne's guest rooms and meeting space.
